FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions
What is a short haul move? This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves.
What is a local move? This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state.
What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state.
Does a moving company need to be licensed? Moving companies are actually registered. This means the federal government has issued them a certificate of authority that allows them to move household goods in any of the 50 states. Local moving companies may also be registered with the US Department of Transportation to move interstate shipments within certain geographical areas.
Will my movers clean my home once my move is complete? Most professional movers will clean up any mess they have made during the actual move. However, they don’t perform general house cleaning so you must hire a professional cleaning service or perform this task yourself.
What should I do with essential items I need on my moving day? We recommend that you transport any essentials such as bed linens, towels, toilet paper, cosmetics, toiletries and medication in your own vehicle. If this isn’t possible, clearly mark these boxes and make sure your movers place them in a specific place at your destination.
Do employees of moving companies have to be insured? Yes, you should verify that all the professional movers and packers are insured by the company you select.
Will my moving company get rid of any extra trash? Yes, but they will charge you for any items they need to take to a waste disposal location, including the time required to drive to and from the area and the management fee required.
If I have a limited budget, can I hire movers to pack and move some of my items? Yes, you should hire professional movers and packers to transport large, awkward items such as desks, pianos and sofas and breakable items such as china and glasses. Make sure to hire movers for heavy items that must be hoisted into or out of your home because you risk serious injury if you try to move them yourself.
Should I disassemble my furniture before the move? You can do this if you have time, but it’s not required. If your movers need to dismantle any furniture, they will reassemble it in your new home.
Should my movers pack my breakables? We recommend letting professional movers pack breakable items because most insurance providers will only cover the cost of damage done to breakable items that have been packed by a professional moving company.
How are fees calculated for interstate moves? Your moving company may charge you a set fee which depends on the inventory of your items and delivery timeframe. They may also charge you based on the weight or volume of your items.
What is full-value coverage? If you purchase this type of coverage, your moving company will either replace a damaged or lost item with an article of similar kind and value, pay you for the replacement cost, repair the item or pay you the cost of any necessary repairs.
